Who Said Girls Can’t Lift? Why Weight Training is the New Cardio.

Posted on 12 March 2015

Whenever you go to the gym, you pass by the dumbbells and barbells and other free weights, and you’ve most likely thought about lifting weights. But you are probably unsure and scared to hit the weights and go straight to the treadmill.

We’ve all heard horror stories about how weightlifting makes women bulky, body builder-esque or even that it’s a “man’s exercise”. We’ve also heard the scare about how it ruins your joints and if you stop lifting weights, all of your muscle will turn into fat. Fortunately, all of those are myths and they are keeping you from getting the toned and curvy body you want. In fact, if you want to become stronger, weight lifting is necessary, so put your insecurities to rest.

Just because you’re not aiming to have huge biceps or bulky thighs doesn't mean you should avoid weights. Here are several reasons why you should include weight lifting in your fitness routine:

  • It speeds up fat loss. Lifting weights increases your metabolism even after you're done working out. This is because your muscle tears after lifting weights and, therefore, they need energy to repair themselves. This increase in metabolism prompts your body to burn more calories from fat. Ultimately, this will lead to the lean body you are looking for.

  • It helps you keep track on your healthy diet. As cardio workouts do motivate you to stay eating clean, lifting weights will do the same.

  • It is a stress reliever. Studies show that the fittest people have lower levels of stress hormones that those who were less fit.

  • It will give you curves. When you lift weights, you are building muscles and toning your body to give it more form. Training the right body parts can help you obtain that curvy booty poppin’

  • You’ll lose more fat than you’ll gain in muscle. Research shows that the average woman who strength trains or weight lifts two to three times a week, gained 1.75 pounds of lean muscle and lost 3.5 pounds of fat within an eight week period.

  • Weight lifting will improve the quality of your sleep.

  • It will strengthen your bones. Strength training will help you with your bone density by fighting against the loss of bone mass. In addition, this will help prevent Osteoporosis.

  • It will improve your functionality. You use your muscles on a daily basis whether its to lift you coffee cup of to walk to your car. So why not improve your everyday performance by becoming stronger? After all, no woman needs the help of a man, even in the strength department!

  • Ultimately prevents your metabolism from declining as your grow older. Growing old is inevitable, but a fit body can definitely be maintained as long as your strength training regularly. This will keep your metabolism elevated even when you past your 40s.

All of these are important reasons as to why you should lift weights because it clearly has a positive effect on your health and wellbeing. But more importantly, you will look and feel younger and have the confidence boost that everyone needs!
